Giveaways and Takeaways
Well my first experience with list building using a “giveaway event” is almost completed. The event was called, appropriately, “The World Cup Giveaway”
So what happened?
Thanks to my “giveaways coach” Allan Davis I did not have to do any of the gift processing and preparation. However, using the magic of Skype and it’s “share screen” facility, Allen taught me how to place my gifts into the event and a basic understanding of what goes on.
Bit of a Shock!
Stupid me thought that all I would need to do is simply deposit my 2 gifts into the event and then sit back and count my new subscribers….
For those of you who have never participated in a giveaway event let me assure you that these events are fast changing and require pretty close monitoring.
There are 2 groups involved – free members who join looking for their free gifts and the free gift contributors who can be either free or have paid upgrades. I took the top upgrade available as it was part of the training deal with my coach.
As a contributor if you are not careful you can find your gift being relegated further and further back in the gift pages catalog…and just like doing a Google keyword search…how many of you would bother to look after the first few pages of results? I don’t!
So to ensure you keep your position you either have to encourage more people to join (existing subscribers or forum friends etc) or for this event you could buy credits to improve the position of your gift.
The All-Telling Stats
Before I give you the stats with only 2 days to go for the event, I must tell you that the cost I paid to be upgraded to the top (Platinum) level was $97. this entitled me to 2 gifts and 2 One Time Offers attached to my free gifts…to perhaps make a few dollars on the back-end of the giveaway.
Actual Site Stats:
1790 free members (looking for free gifts)
1942 contributors (offering free gifts) – of these 83 were paid upgrade contributors
Actual Gift Stats with 2 Days to go:
Top contributor sign-ups with 2 days to go – 335
My number of sign-ups – 47
If the current daily trend of new subscribers continues for the last 2 days then I will end up with approximately 65 new subscribers.
Expensive BUT…..
In “cold cash” terms this means my very first 60 subscribers cost me about $1.50 each! I am sure this is not a great result in pure economic terms but the price was irrelevant for me this time.
Why? Because I was learning AND I got a big kick out of getting my VERY FIRST subscribers. By the way I am treating them like GOLD!!!
Best Selling Gifts
If you are planning to enter a giveaway soon then this info may be helpful as an indicator of what the members thought were “hot product” areas:
In no particular order but all the listed products attracted lots of subscribers:
- backlink software tools
- website graphics tools and kits
- step-by-step video training
- list building
- how to make blogs profitable
- traffic exchanges
- video marketing
- affiliate marketing
So there you have it. Now I am getting organised to enter my next 3 giveaways…but I will not be upgrading in all of them…have to watch my pennies.
What Are your Experiences with Giveaways?
Please add your feedback below as I would like to learn more about this list building strategy. I am sure my readers would appreciate your giveaway experiences as well.

Great to see that you have done well in the giveaway Peter and like you said it was an experience. Now you have the know how to enter the other giveaways.
Having 60 subscribers is not too shabby. I have a little bit less and have entered two giveaways thus far. The most I spent though to upgrade was $15. I have to watch my pennies too.
I really need to grow my list so that is what I’m focusing on at the moment. Curious to know if you had made any sales on your OTO’s? I couldn’t figure out how to get my OTO’s onto the giveaways so I missed out on that (how stupid of me huh)?
Will really have to make that my top priority next time. Congrats again and here’s to more subscribers!

Hi Anna,
No luck so far with the OTO’s….and they were really good value as well.
But the learning curve was great for me.
This upgrade was expensive but it also included a lot of support training.
Thanks for the supportive comments Anna

Peter.
Well done on taking action and entering JV Giveaways.
It’s a good idea to just gauge how many contributors there are so that you know which ones to upgrade for and which ones not to.
If you promote well enough then you don’t have to upgrade in all of them.
You can set up a twitter account that’s specifically for promoting JV giveaways.
Reach new heights,
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
Really good idea mate. I will set up a twitter account especially for this strategy.
at the moment it’s difficult for me to promote very much as my list is only small

Hey Peter,
Thanks for sharing the giveaway in so much detail.
You done really well on getting those sign ups.
I think it was well worth your time and effort.
It’s not nice when you do a giveaway and get stuck away down on page 100 or something, but the more you do them the more sign ups you will get etc.

Hey Peter,
Nice breakdown of your giveaway experience. I haven’t done one before so don’t know the exact details of how they work but it seems like a good way to get more subscribers. Seems like you’re quite an expert on how it works.
Infact, you should do an ebook on how the giveaways work. I’d download it for sure!
Hope it goes well,
Bailey

Hi Bailey,
I think after just one Giveaway the term “expert” is a bit of a stretch….but thanks for the great compliment.
Actually I am involved with 3 other Giveaway events over the next 3 weeks and after that I plan to write a blog post that summarises my experiences.
Best wishes always Bailey and I loved the video on your blog

Hey Peter,
Thanks LOADS for sharing detailed info here. This will come in very handy for anyone entering future Giveaways, particularly knowing the best selling gifts so THANK YOU!!
I’m finding that Giveaway sign ups are unpredictable (I still haven’t upgraded one yet) so will return a lot more opt ins than another even though the gifts are never very high up the listings!
Still some is better than none!

Hi Rob,
Well Giveaways are still a steep learning curve for me but it does seem that there are so many of them now that they have lost a bit of their shine! Still it is worth it to get our lists started and I have also found some really good people who are contributors that could one day be a JV partner

Hi Peter,
I’ve never upgraded in a Giveaway but I’ve entered quite a few and had a slow but steady increase in subs.
I’ve been busy with coaching and the 2010 30 Day Challenge the past few weeks but I’ll be getting back to Giveaways this week I think.
To your success,
Lesley

Hi Lesley. Actually I upgraded before because my list was so small to promote the giveaway to.
I wish you well with the 30 Day challenge – it’s also great for your traffic!!
Like you I am getting back into Giveaways soon with my new product. It’s been a good success on the Warrior forum and I hope I can replicate the results in a few Giveaways. Actually my plan is to get involved with some JV’s as soon as I can to really give my list building a “shot in the arm”
Best wishes and thanks for the feedback – greatly appreciated
